The OWASP Top 10 is a widely used awareness document from the Open Worldwide Application Security Project, listing the most critical security risks to web applications, based on data from real-world testing and incidents. Security teams use it as a checklist, auditors reference it, and interviewers ask about it. This article walks through each category with a concrete example and the defences that matter, written for developers rather than security specialists. The categories and order follow the widely used 2021 edition; OWASP has since published a newer edition, so check owasp.org for the latest list, but the underlying risks and defences carry over.
