Multithreading in Java
A practical tour of Java's concurrency toolkit: executors and thread pools, Callable and Future, CompletableFuture pipelines, concurrent collections, locks and atomics, CountDownLatch and Semaphore, parallel streams, virtual threads and structured concurrency, and how Spring's @Async fits in.

Our article on threads covered the fundamentals: what a thread is, race conditions, locks and deadlocks. This one is about the tools. Modern Java code rarely creates Thread objects directly; instead it uses the java.util.concurrent package, which provides thread pools, futures, concurrent collections and coordination utilities, and since Java 21, virtual threads. Knowing which tool fits which job is what separates concurrent code that is fast and correct from code that is neither. Each section below includes a small runnable example.
