Load balancers

What load balancers do and how they work: spreading traffic across servers, layer 4 versus layer 7, balancing algorithms, health checks, session stickiness, TLS termination, connection draining for zero-downtime deploys, global load balancing, and the common products.

One server can only handle so much traffic, and when it fails, everything fails with it. The standard answer is to run several identical servers and put a load balancer in front of them. Clients connect to the load balancer, which forwards each request or connection to a healthy server, spreading the work and quietly routing around failures. Almost every website of any size uses one, often several layers of them. This article explains how they decide where traffic goes and the features that matter in practice.
