Every device on a network needs an address, and every router needs to know which addresses are nearby and which must be sent onwards. IP addresses and subnets answer both questions. Subnetting has a reputation for being confusing, but it rests on one idea: an address is split into a network part and a host part, and a number like /24 just says where the split is. Once that clicks, cloud network design, firewall rules and Docker networking all make more sense. This article explains it with worked examples.
