gRPC explained

What gRPC is and when to use it: Protocol Buffers and .proto contracts, generated client and server code, the four call types including streaming, HTTP/2 underneath, deadlines and status codes, a working Python example, and how gRPC compares with REST.

When one service calls another inside a system, a REST call with JSON works but carries overhead: text that must be parsed, field names repeated in every message, and a contract that lives in documentation rather than code. gRPC, an open-source framework created at Google, makes a remote call look like calling a local function. You describe the service once in a .proto file, generate client and server code in your languages, and messages travel in a compact binary format over HTTP/2. This article explains how it works and when it fits.
