HTTP is stateless: each request arrives with no memory of the ones before it. Yet websites remember that you are signed in, what is in your basket, and which language you chose. The mechanism behind most of this is the cookie: a small piece of data the server asks the browser to store and send back with later requests. Cookies are simple in principle and full of security-relevant details in practice, so every web developer benefits from knowing exactly how they behave.
